Palmina Dolchetto 2012

DolcettoPalmina Wines Tasting Notes on Dolcetto

Arrived with wine club shipment: Plonk Wine Club Tasting Notes

Aaron: This one is ok but not my favorite as with most of the Plonk Wine Club bottles we got.  It was generally oaky with a little raspberry and pretty dry.  I expected something sweeter and a little thicker – this was a bit too watery.  87 points

Teri: Rich in red cherry, mulberry, and plum, this red wine was easy to drink and versatile with different food flavors. Cherry was the dominant flavor I tasted along side a raspberry smell. Not much oak flavors throughout. This black Italian wine grape translates to “the little sweet one”, perhaps that is fitting for the rich berry and cherry flavors within this wine. 89 points

Field Recordings Camp 4 Vineyard Cargnan 2012

Field Recordings Carignan 2012Plonk Wine Club Pick

Aaron: Burnt oak and strawberry on the nose made for a unique combination.  The fruity flavor with lots of tannins made for a strong and lingering flavor with just a few veggies for complexity.  Good, not great, but not bad.  88

Teri: For those of you looking for something different, this is worth a try. Made by fermenting the juice within the berry before crushing, this wine brings unique characteristics and flavor that you don’t find in many others. I loved the juicy chocolate cherry nose and the cinnamon-spice finish. The wine itself carries young cherry and mineral flavors. This unique wine would be great to pair with pork tacos and Asian stews. 88 points

Luis Pato Colheita Seleccionada 2011

Plonk Wine Club Luis Pato Colheita Seleccionada

Aaron:  I felt like I was walking through a castle in the woods while smelling the dark forest in this bottle.  While nice and full, the oak and green, unripe berries didn’t do much for me.  The berries simply weren’t juicy enough, making the mild tannins too noticeable.  My primary comment: Teri won’t like it.  86 points

Teri: This Portugal red contains a deep earthy and spicy nose. The taste to me was slightly chalky on the finish and overall very dry. The best part was the bitter cherry and spice on the flavor, giving it some juicy flavors but not too much. This bottle would go well with roasted salmon or Cuban style chicken. 87 points

Anima Libera Morellino di Scansano 2011

Plonk Wine of the Month Club Anima Libera Morellino di Scansano

Aaron: Teri liked this much more than I did.  I picked up prominent smells of tar and oak rounded with some mild chocolate.  The flavor was a bit tight right out of the bottle with cranberry and smoke creating a slightly unpleasant, lingering aftertaste.  The strawberries and woodsiness which followed the decent flavor were ok, but overall not one of my favorites.  86 points

Teri: I didn’t know much about this varietal, Morellino, prior to enjoying this bottle. After some research, I found it to be a clone of Sangiovese, a common red Italian wine grape. The flavors of the wine mirror those of Sangiovese with a strong blend of fruit and earth. I tasted an overwhelmingly semi-sweet flavor of juicy strawberries and rhubarb with some coco and oak on the finish. Overall, this wine if full bodied and bold. It would be great to pair well with a hearty dinner and red sauces. 91 points

Oeno Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Received from Plonk Wine Club: about $20 Oeno Cab Sauv 2012

Aaron:  Subtle cinnamon and dark fruits hid behind tall oaks on the nose.  This cab has a great mouth-feel with is full but not thick.  It’s tart enough to not seem like juice but is not unpleasant.  A bit more aging would do it justice to take away some of the sharpness and round out the flavors.  Definitely a smoking tobacco pipe flavor with some woods dominating any fruit notes.  While not my favorite I felt this wasn’t bad but more important, feel many trained wine nerds would like it.  87 points

Teri: Oeno makes a full flavored cab with medium tannins that are noticeable but sit nicely on the palate. The full, dark raspberry smell mirrors the fruit forward flavor on the wine that transitions into a finish of strawberries and oak. This bottle would pair well with ribs and skirt steak and stand up to a variety of flavorful dishes. Made in small quantities, this bottle is sure to go fast. 90 points
