Kiona Vineyards Red Mountain Gewurztraminer 2014

Aaron:  Great bottle that is wonderfully full for a white wine.  Peachy, sunflower nose with rich, sweet flavor and lots of white grape.  My favorite flavor: bourbon vanilla!  Alcohol was definitely prominent throughout, and this was a bit sharp on the edges but the fullness and flavor make up for it.  90 points

Teri: With a beautiful smell of peach, this Gewurztraminer is a winner from smell to swallow. Ample different flavors fill your mouth: fresh cantaloupe, banana with caramel and floral undertones. There is a long lingering finish but still a light body leaving a smooth mouthfeel after swallowing. Complex and delicious. 92 points

Aaron:  This is great!  The strong red nose of grapefruit and pomegranate makes for a nice summer wine while the mellow, smooth flavor is very refreshing.  It was a bit more tart than I expected, but not super acidic and very full.  I found this to be appealing while still being complex which was unexpected.  91 (94 for a rose) points

Teri: I enjoy rose wines, but hardly purchase them for myself. Every once in a while there is a rose which comes along that is flavorful, easy-drinking, and full enough to makes me what to purchase some to take home. This is one of those bottles. The nose is a light hint of citrus and strawberry but the flavor is extremely full of cherry, watermelon and a hint of herbs at the end. Easy drinking and highly enjoyable. This one could be enjoyed at any time as a stand-alone wine or with food. 91 points

The Big Kiona Zinfandel 2011

The Big Zinfandel 2011Purchased from the Kiona Tasting Room, $35

Aaron: I enjoyed this red which featured a rosy, dark purple nose with wet tree trunks.  The fruit is super jammy and meaty; basically liquid steak tartare with a pinch of pepper.  Chocolate covered strawberries with some herbal undertones make this pretty complex and very very full bodied.  90 points

Teri: This has easily become another one of my favorite wineries. Aaron and I had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful tasting room located in the Red Mountain AVA of Washington. Overlooking a beautiful view of the vineyard, we savored many of Kiona’s wines which were just as stunning. Many of their bold Zinfandels and Merlot’s are noteworthy but we took this bottle home because it was my favorite. The chocolate and vanilla nose would make a wonderful candle. On the first sip, your mouth is filled with flavors of raspberry pie, sage, and warm vanilla. Bold and hearty from start to finish with tannins that lay down well this bottle is savory enough to enjoy on its own or paired with mean, cheeses, pastas and hearty sauces. 92 points
