Aaron: Lots of dark raisins with chocolate and damp tobacco.  Juicy berries with a full, smooth flavor.  Mellow tannins and very rich, vanilla, oak flavor that’s bursting with blackberry.  This is decently complex without losing the fruit forwardness that makes it really tasty.  91 points

Teri: Charles Smith is a “bigger” wine producer out of Washington and does this Syrah justice. It has a smell of dark red fruits, a vanilla aftertaste and a full, but smooth, body that yields flavors of red apple peel, leather, and a hint of spice on the finish. 90 points for the taste and the price point.

Josh’s Swill 2016

Purchased from Van Camp Cellars, $49.99

Aaron:  Lots of fruit with some seawater and oak barrels.  There weren’t many “trees” but definitely oak from the barrel.  The flavor is huge, featuring lots of berries and absent most earthy tones.  There were some mild mushrooms at the end but mostly dark, dense fruit.  89 points

Teri: Flavors of blackberry pie and vanilla on the nose and body. The wine is fruit forward with some spice on the back end. I enjoyed tasting the flavors of black cherry, plum, and just a hint of licorice. 90 points

Aaron:  The nose on this cab reminded me of wet bark with some dark mud.  It wasn’t off-putting because it was still light and subtle.  The mossy flavor of ripe berries had more oaky earth tones than fruit but was enjoyable.  This bottle in general is pretty standard and easy drinking.  Not bad and easy enough to find.  90 points

Teri: For an easy to find, standard bottle, this is a good go-to if you find yourself with a shallow depth of options. The smell is quite standard. It smells of mixed berries and sweet pepper. On the wine, I taste sweet plum, blackberry, agave oak, and a light hint of white pepper. Mostly tastes of fruit, not complex, but easy to drink. 88 points

Aaron: This has a big, juicy nose with rich fruits.  The fruit forward flavor is similar, with jam and moss.  There is no bite on this wine at all, just some dark, tan bark that tastes dried – probably the tannins kicking in.  Good flavorful wine.  90 points

Teri: I think this bottle needs some time to open up. Give it 2-3 hours before drinking. A full bodied Syrah filled with flavors of earthy vanilla and plum with a smokey lingering aftertaste. Not my favorite at first, but it got better with some time. 86 points
